Benefits of Exercise in Water
The benefits of exercise in general terms are widely known, but some physiotherapists may
be less familiar with the benefits of exercise in water - a main component of Hydrotherapy. It is fun, refreshing, exhilarating and relaxing to participate in water activity. All degrees of exercise can be undertaken without the stress associated with having to support bodyweight.
Muscular strength, physical fitness, and range of movement all may be maintained and increased. Balance and coordination can be improved; pain decreased, new swimming and safety skills acquired. The psychological and social benefits are numerous, especially when the activity takes place in a group. Hydrotherapy for the well patient in order to maintain and improve general health and well-being is for all ages from the very young to the frail elderly.
