Buoyancy acts differently on the body than gravity. There is no value in using the same low intensity land-based exercise in an aquatic environment as a strengthening exercise. For example, on land, hip abduction when standing is gravity resisted, when done in the water in the same standing position the exercise is now buoyancy assisted, and thus is less effective. In this situation, the position of the patient needs to be changed into a buoyancy-resisted position to be comparable to the land-based exercise. When addressing the problem of muscle weakness, position the patient and their direction or motion so that the water's buoyancy and resistance effects can be harnessed to produce strength conditioning effects not available on dry land.
